Biography of Senator Fiona O'Malley

Fiona was elected to Dail Eireann on her first attempt in May 2002 and is the Progressive Democrats TD for Dun Laoghaire. She was elected to Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council in 1999, representing the Stillorgan Ward, and was an active member of the Council until September 2003, when she resigned her seat with the abolition of the dual mandate.

Fiona was a member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Sports, Tourism, Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, until November 2005 when she joined the Joint Committee on Communication, Marine and Natural Resources. She is also a member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children. Fiona was appointed chairperson of the Sub-committee on Orthodondics which published a report into the Orthodontic Service in Ireland. She is also a member of the Dail All-Party group concerned with matters of sexual and reproductive health. She has travelled to South America and South Africa with the UNFPA and has spoken of the need for a clear safe sex message both in Ireland and in the developing world.

Fiona is also a member of the Sub committee on Assisted Human Reproduction.

Fiona is the Progressive Democrats Spokesperson on Energy and the Arts. She is a strong advocate for the development of renewable energy in Ireland and has written extensively on the subject and Launched the party's Discussion Document on Energy in February 2006.

Before entering politics Fiona worked in the London Arts Board in the visual arts and dance departments, promoting opportunities for both artists and audiences.

Fiona was educated in Laurel Hill, Limerick, Trinity College Dublin, where she graduated with a Degree in French at the History of Western European Art & Architecture. She obtained a Masters Degree in Museum and Gallery Management from the City University, London.
