Dear Mr. O’Brien,
Dublin City Council HGVs Management Strategy
I write in response to the invitation for submissions to the draft HGV management plan. As a public representative for the Dun Laoghaire constituency I am extremely concerned at the proposal and the impact it will have on residential roads in my constituency.
The proposal to ban HGV’s from city streets will have the obvious effect of displacing this traffic on to roads in the suburbs. The proposal to route traffic via the Port Tunnel and one other free route will result in a huge increase in the volume of HGV traffic along this free route: (Strand Road, Sandymount, along the Rock Road and up Mount Merrion Road, Leopardstown Road, and Brewery Road). These roads are not designed to take the constant onslaught of extremely heavy industrial traffic. There are huge environmental concerns not to mention the obvious safety issues. According to your own consultant Dr McNicholas, residents along these routes will be subject to a four-fold increase in HGV traffic. How can it be wise to burden these roads with massive increases in HGV at the same time as the DTO has a proposal to put a QBC along both the Rock Road and Mount Merrion Avenue? The traffic chaos that would ensue does not bear thinking about.
Your proposal is ill advised and will heap misery and danger on the people of south county Dublin. I am alarmed at the City Council seems to have no regard for the citizens who live beyond the city boundary and in an attempt to rid the city streets of HGV traffic is content to put it on suburban streets.
I caution you not to proceed with your proposal to allow HGV traffic free access and entry along the Sandymount route.
I trust you ill take into consideration the views and concerns of the citizens of South county Dublin. It really is unacceptable to divert the traffic along the residential communities as you propose.
Yours sincerely,
Fiona O’Malley TD
