Budget is environmentally-sound and economically-sensible - Fiona O'Malley

PD Energy Spokesperson Fiona O'Malley welcomed the environmentally-sound and economically-sensible measures introduced in this Budget.

The Dun Laoghaire TD said she was particularly pleased with the announcement that the VRT system be changed to take account of CO2 emissions. She also welcomed the plan to consult on rebalancing the motor tax system to incentivise 'cleaner' cars, as well as the scheme for mandatory labelling of cars based on CO2 emissions.

"This Budget proves that environmental protection and economic progress are by no means incompatible. This is particularly the case when people are incentivised to take part in environmentally-sound and economically-sensible measures, such as outlined in Budget 2007.

"We have the potential to create a world class renewable energy industry in Ireland. So I am pleased that tax incentive for corporate investment in solar, wind, hydro, or bio-mass technologies has been extended for the next five years.

"Grant-aiding under bio-heat scheme has been extended to new technologies such as solar panels. Also, the bio-heat scheme will be extended to non-commercial sectors, such as community and sport facilities."

Deputy O'Malley said the award of an extra €20 million up to 2009 for Greener Homes Scheme was another important measure.

She also welcomed Minister Cowan's re-statement of his commitment to meeting our Kyoto target.
