O’Malley welcomes €27 million for Dun Laoghaire’s Local Authority Housing Programme
Progressive Democrats TD Fiona O’Malley has welcomed the announcement that €27 million is being made available for Dun Laoghaire’s local authority housing programme for this year.
The money is to be primarily spent on the construction of local authority housing, with additional funding for remedial works to local authority dwellings and for the provision of traveller accommodation.
“Dun Laoghaire has done very well in the 2005 provision of funding,” says Deputy O’Malley, ‘with €25 million being allocated for housing construction, €1million on traveller accommodation, and €1 million on remedial works.’
The funding marks an increase on monies allocated to Dun Laoghaire County Council in 2004, and is in line with increased funding for local authorities across the country. In total, €922 million is being spent by the Government on the provision of local authority housing this year, an increase of 19.3% on 2004.
“With a growing demand for local authority houses throughout Dun Laoghaire, this funding well help speed up the construction programme and meet increasing demand. It will also provide the necessary funds to carry out essential work and repairs to existing local authority dwellings to ensure their occupants enjoy a high standard of accommodation.”
“The Government is committed to increasing the supply of local authority homes throughout the country and this substantial investment will maintain a strong momentum in the 2005 building programme,” says Deputy O’Malley. ‘The Government is keenly aware that there is still a waiting list for local authority housing, and is anxious to reduce that list as quickly as possible.’
