Dun Laoghaire Redevelopment Plans completely inappropriate says O’Malley
Progressive Democrats TD Fiona O’Malley has described plans by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to re-develop the baths site as ‘all wrong and wholly inappropriate.’
Deputy O’Malley made the comments as the Council’s plans for the baths site went on public display for a three-week period.
‘I am glad that the public is being given an opportunity to have its views heard and I hope that the Council will take those views seriously. There is nothing worse than a public consultation process that is merely cosmetic in its workings.’
The Baths site has lain derelict for over 15 years. Local people are keen to have them redeveloped, but any redevelopment must be appropriate and fit the architectural and maritime context. The current plans fail in this regard.
Much is made of the enhanced public amenities, which will result from this development. But promises for libraries, ice rinks and other amenities were made before and did not materialise. A public plaza, which could be turned seasonally into an ice rink or skateboard park, already exists outside the ferry terminal. Why are we not developing existing public open spaces for public use rather than developing into the sea? The whole ambiance and character of the seafront will change and views of the sea will be greatly diminished.
The case to redevelop this site is well made but the current proposals are wholly inappropriate. They will destroy the seascape and the uniquely Victorian character of Dun Laoghaire.
‘I recognise the need of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to boost its rates revenue in order to fund local services, but the Council must balance its financial obligations with its duty to protect the heritage and landscape of the public it serves.’
Can this development, with its 180 apartments, not be moved to a more appropriate site inland?
According to Deputy O’Malley, ‘there is a huge level of public disquiet and anger locally, with the Council’s plans. These residents intend to voice their views and concerns during the public consultation period, and I hope that the Council is prepared to listen and amend the plans accordingly.’
