O' Malley welcomes funding for conservation projects in Dun Laoghaire

Progressive Democrats TD Fiona O’Malley has welcomed the news that Dun Laoghaire is to benefit from a number of conservation grants to the tune of €368,000.

The money is being given by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government under its Major Capital Programme for Built Heritage, 2005.

‘Dun Laoghaire is very fortunate to have such a rich architectural history and it is important that we conserve this for future generations. I am very pleased that the county has received this funding to support a number of different conservation projects on the ground,’ says Deputy O’Malley. ‘Conservation can be a costly and time-consuming process, but it ultimately benefits the whole community, and it is important that the state recognises this fact and supports the work financially.’

Funding of €340,000 is to be provided to Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council for its Architectural Protection Grant Scheme. According to Deputy O’Malley, ‘The funding will allow the County to support local heritage projects on the ground, and help to conserve heritage properties which are in private ownership.’

In addition, a grant of €28,000 is being made to St. Michael’s Church and Bell Tower to help meet its conservation costs over the coming year.
