O’Malley presses for state commitment to wind energy

Progressive Democrats TD Fiona O’Malley is urging the Taoiseach to ‘put money behind his words’ and embark on a programme of state funding to support the development of the wind energy sector in Ireland.

‘Yesterday’s opening of seven wind turbines in Arklow is to be welcomed, but in reality we are only scratching the surface when it comes to harnessing this country’s wind energy potential.’

‘The Taoiseach’s comments show a recognition that Government funding is necessary for future projects to get off the ground. To date, wind energy is an area that has received virtually no state support. I welcome the Taoiseach’s comments and I would urge him to commit money to this sector as quickly as possible.’

‘If you consider our geographical positioning, Ireland has the potential to become world leaders in the development of wind energy. We have all the criteria needed – except perhaps the commitment from Government.’

‘Following the opening of Meentycat Wind energy Farm in Co. Donegal, Airtricity said it would not be developing any further projects in Ireland because of a lack of state support. I think this lamentable. It is a great shame that we are not facilitating those who are pioneers in this field.’

‘There is a lot of talk about the importance of developing renewable energy and meeting our Kyoto targets. But action is now needed.

‘I am glad that Government appears to have woken up to the need for state support in this area. Ireland should be leading the wind energy field – not lagging well behind.
