Climate change report proves serious Government action needed – O’Malley

Progressive Democrats TD Fiona O’Malley says today’s report by Met Eireann and UCD into Climate Change ‘offers clear proof that serious action by Government is needed if Ireland is to come anywhere close to meeting its Kyoto commitments.’

The report, which was published today, concludes that temperatures are set to rise by an average of 1.5 degrees Celsius and more erratic weather patterns set to occur, with green house emissions responsible for the rise in temperatures.

‘We are still well below meeting our Kyoto targets, with Ireland generating 25% more greenhouse gasses than it promised to under the Kyoto Protocol,’ says Fiona O’Malley TD.

‘Thanks to this Report produced today we now have the empirical evidence that temperatures in this country –  as with the global pattern - are on the rise. What we need now is to take decisive and urgent action to cut our greenhouse emissions and reduce our over-dependence on oil.’

‘We currently have a very underdeveloped wind energy sector in Ireland, because of a lack of state support. Despite our ideal geographical position and conditions, we lag well behind the rest of Europe in terms of wind power. This should not be the case – we should be world leaders in this field.’

‘Similarly, the Irish Bio fuels industry has not yet got off the ground, again because of a failure by Government to properly incentivise it.’

‘We have all the facts and statistics we ever needed about climate change. What is required is a cohesive and effective response from Government.’
