ESRI Carbon Tax proposal rejected by the Progressive Democrats

The Economic and Social Research Institute’s proposal to introduce a Carbon Tax on fuels has been strongly rejected by the Progressive Democrats’ Energy spokesperson Fiona O’Malley.

Deputy Fiona O’Malley said to introduce a carbon tax now would be to add fuel to the fire of spiralling oil prices which are at an all time high.

The PD Deputy claims “The recent price hikes are already causing hardship for commuters and small businesses. To add to that hardship by introducing a carbon tax is simply unthinkable.

“If we want to reduce pollution and meet rising demand for energy we need to seriously invest in renewable sources of energy such as wind wave and biomass,” says O’Malley.

“Ireland’s uniquely positioned to benefit from renewable energy as we have some of the best wind and wave potential on the planet and a climate ideal for the production of biomass.”
