Labour shackled to rusty Statist economic policies – O’Malley

Progressive Democrats TD Fiona O’Malley says the Labour Party is no friend of the consumer.

The Dun Laoghaire deputy said the party was shackled to old-fashioned and ineffective economic strategies.

“Their rusty Statist policies are a sure-fire way of repressing competition, and harming consumers. Indeed, the classic competition success story, the aviation sector, is one that particularly upsets the Labour Party,” she said.

Speaking on the Competition Bill in the Dail, Deputy O’Malley said the Progressive Democrat approach was so different.

“We determined that the removal of the Groceries Order would be pro-consumer by introducing greater competition. Yes, this would upset certain groups. But the fact is that this is undoubtedly the correct step to take.”

And she rubbished the notion that an effective alternative coalition government was emerging.

She said the Opposition had an appalling record on taxation and was unsure on future policy, and argued that the economy would go backwards again under Fine Gael and Labour.

“Though it risks becoming a mantra – but like many a mantra it is true – the Labour Party is certainly no friend of the consumer.”
